Addressing drug abuse
Updated: Sep 17
For over a year now, our Kenyan partners have been addressing the drug abuse problem among the youth in their community by delivering a twelve-step narcotics addiction programme. Three facilitators have run several programmes that include working with a group of young people (boys and girls) on a weekly basis and sharing a meal with them. The need is great and the demand is high.
In recent weeks, despite widespread local prejudice against anyone from the slum, our partners have been invited into a few local schools to deliver their drug awareness and twelve-step programmes, and also to work with some of the addicts on a one-to-one basis. This recognition by the schools is no small achievement and more importantly an acknowledgement that they can make a difference.
17 September 2021 update: Our team in Kibera have been invited into yet another school, Maono Education Centre. Dan, the school's director said "There are big NGOs in Kibera but no one is doing what you are ... directly reaching out to community members."
